Hawks Golf begins Spring Season
February 15, 2011: The Hawk's early spring season got off to a good but windy start. The Hawks played in the Titan Winter Invitational in Suntree, Fl Feb. 7th and 8th. On the first 18 holes on Monday, the Hawks posted a score of 305 which was good enough for 5th place. The Hawks were lead by Blane Breheny's 71. While playing in winds that reached 20 to 25 mph during the 2nd 18 holes, the Hawks got blown off the course and lost focus while posting a 329, dropping them to 10th place after the first day of play. Coach Wright's concern going into this event was that, with lack of playing and practice time due to the bad weather, the team would be low on confidence.
On the third 18 holes, the Hawks began to turn things around and prove that they had some fire and fight in them. Led by Stefan Grochowski's 71, the team posted a very good score of 304 on the tight Classic course at Suntree CC. The Hawks posted a total score of 938, good for a 6th place finish in the 16 team event. Stefan Grochowski total score of 230 was good for a 13th place finish. Coach Wright felt that finishing 6th in an event against a very good field that consisted mainly of four year colleges, plus very limited time to practice was a good start to the spring season as well as a confidence booster for the young Hawks team.
The next stop for the Hawks will be March 12th and 13th at the Tusculum Invitational in Greeneville, Tennessee.
Golf Team Scores First Win of the Season
Greenville, SC - Sept. 21 - The Hawks put together two solid rounds of golf and came away with a win on September 21 at the North Greenville University Fall Classic, shooting 308 and winning the team event by 5 shots.
Going into the second round, the Hawks were leading by 11 and had shot a team total of 269. Leading the charge was freshmen Blane Breheny, shooting a bogey-free round of 69. Stefan Grochowski shot a 75, Thomas Whiting and Skyler Blair shot a round of 76, respectively and Mike Cabush posted a 79. Blane Breheny finished on the All Tournament team, 69-78=147.
The team got off to a slow start in the second round with a front nine score of 10 over par. North Greenville had pulled within one or two shots moving to the back nine holes. The team played the last five holes well, holding off a strong run by North Greenville.
Coach Wright stated, "I am very proud of the 1st win of the season but most proud of the way the team pulled it back together and finished strong."
Men's Golf Preview for 2010
The Hawks are ready to start their run to the National Championship. The quest will begin on August 23rd when the 2010 Hawks golf team members report to the first day of classes. Coach Wright feels that this Hawks team has a great blend of returning players as well as the best incoming freshmen class in Hawks golf history. Returning district team members Thomas Whiting, Skyler Blair, and Mike Kerns, along with other returning players Braam Botha, Zach Satterfield, Stefan Grochowski and Mike Bourn will give the team great leadership.
The historic incoming freshman class led by Mike Cabush from Wisconsin, and Blane Breheny from England, should prove to be major factors in the makeup of this year’s team. The competition to make this team will prove to be outstanding. Coach Wright commented that the depth of this team will produce a team that the number 5 man will be as good as the number 1 player.
The team knows the Hawks will have to be ready to play on the highest level possible. There is no doubt that the level of play in Region X and District IV is the best in the nation. Coach Wright commented, “I hope that at the end of April 2011 I can report that the 2010-11 Hawks have taken their place in TCTC sports history as the first team to win the very tough Region X Championship plus earned a place in the National Championship by a great finish in the District IV Tournament.”
The history making play will take the Hawks to the overall goal for this season, a trip to the National Championship in May 2011. The National Championship will showcase the Hawks players and most importantly TCTC to a national audience. The Hawks will be focused, ready and prepared to be their best and represent TCTC nationwide.
Support the Hawks: Play in the Spring Open Golf Tournament

Hawks Golf Spring Update
March 19, 2010, Pendleton, SC - The Hawks’ spring season has gotten off to a rocky, rainy and windy start. The Hawks hosted the Spring Challenge at Anderson Country Club on a windy and cold February 26th. The field of SMC, USC Lancaster, the Hawks, and the PGM Program team was treated to a day of small greens and high winds. Anderson CC showed all its teeth as indicated by the scores. The team low total was USC Lancaster with 310 followed by the PGM program at 311 and the Hawks posted a 318.
On March 6th and 7th the Hawks participated in the Tusculum Invitational held in Greeneville, TN. Snow covered the mountain and the Hills Links Club in the valley challenged the field. The Hawks posted scores of 304 and 307 for a team total of 611. Mike Kerns and Skyler Blair lead the Hawks with totals of 149 each. The team was disappointed in the 11th place finish. Coach Wright felt that this finish against a very good field of mainly 4-year college teams was good for a young Hawks team.
The Hawks next traveled to Glen Cannon CC to play in the Montreat event. The snow was gone but not the wind. Playing in winds that reached 20 to 25 mph, the Hawks struggled. The team posted a non-impressive total of 638. Coach Wright knew going into the event that the lack of playing and practice time due to winter weather would be a factor, and he was right.
The Hawks are upbeat as they look to the next two events. The upcoming Region 10 tournament and district championship will determine the field for the National Championships in May. With good weather and four weeks to prepare, Coach Wright believes the Hawks will be ready.
Golf Team Spring Preview
March 1, 2010, Pendleton, SC - The Hawks are ready to start their run to the National Championship. The quest will begin on March 6th at the Tusculum College Invitational. Coach Wright feels this early test against a very good field should give the young Hawks team all the incentive they will need to play their best. A high finish at Tusculum will propel the Hawks into the second event of the season, the Montreat Invitational, with a high level of confidence. If Thomas Whiting can repeat his fall season all-tournament finish, the Hawks should be one of the leading teams in the field.
The month of April will bring the Hawks to the two most important events of the season, the Region X Championship as well as the District IV Championship. Both of these events will place the Hawks against two of the best fields in the county. Coach Wright has said, and the team knows, the Hawks will have to be ready to play on the highest level possible. The level of play in Region X and District IV is among the best in the nation.
Coach Wright commented, “I hope that by April I can report that the 2010 Hawks team has won its first ever Region X Championship and has earned a place in the National Championship by a great finish in the District IV Tournament.”
The potential history-making play this spring could take the Hawks to the overall goal for this season, a trip to the National Championship in Huntsville, AL, in May. The National Championship would provide an opportunity to showcase the Hawks players and the College to a national audience. The Hawks are focused, ready, and prepared to be their best and represent Tri-County well during the spring season.

Spring 2009 Hawks
January 28, 2009 - The Hawks men's golf team is back at practice and gearing up for a challenging spring schedule that includes trips to the coast of South Carolina, to Tennessee, North Carolina and Alabama. Several NCAA Division I teams are scheduled to play in events that we are attending so the competition will be as stiff as any we've faced.
Three of the top five scorers from the fall are back and we look foward to competing for the Region X and District V championship in April that is being held at Terri Pines Golf Club, which is a part of The Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail in Alabama. Seniors Nick Williams and Brett Wyman will lead the way and will be supported by freshmen Richard Allen, George Frederick, Jamie Daniel, Matt Bryan and Zack Walden.
Hawks Finish Fall Season
Oct. 17, 2008 - The TCTC Hawks golf team finished up the fall season by finishing eighth out of thirteen teams at the Coker College Invitational. The Hawks had two top five finishes in tournamnet play this fall and scores were excellent. The team was lead by freshman John Henderson who had a stroke average of 74.9 for 18 competitive rounds played. He was followed by sophomore Nick Williams with 75.8, sophomore Brett Wyman with 77.4, freshman Richard Allen with 78.7 and freshman Brent Abercrombie with 79.3. There were several other players who had an excellent fall season as well and the competition for playing time looks very close for the upcoming spring season. Playing against four year scholarship teams in tournaments can be tough, but of the 2 year programs that competed in the same tournaments, the Hawks were topped by only two of those programs. In stroke average, TCTC is third in the region behind Cape Fear CC and Spartanburg Methodist College. We look foward to spring season with the NJCAA Region X and District tournaments on the schedule that will show how our tough fall schedule has prepared the team to compete with other NJCAA level colleges.
