vs USC-Sumter 9/17/10
On Friday the men hosted USC-Sumter in a rematch of their opening game 3-1 victory. The match opened up with the usual possession type play typical of men's teams. Both teams were trying to feel the other team out and look for weaknesses.
Although the Hawks began to build an attack, they could not put the ball pass the Sumter goalkeeper. "We were finding through balls, but their keeper was quick off his line to kill any attack." Coach Heberling said.
The Hawks continued to move the ball from player to player and look for openings, but the backline of Sumter stayed strong. Finally, after 30 minutes of play, the TCTC Hawks found the back of the net through a beautiful one-touch pass sequence from seven or eight TCTC players. Adriano Menin got the assist on a flicked through ball to Jeff Antinoro who placed it just passed a diving keeper.
"That goal was one of the best all year" Coach Heberling stated, "we moved the ball so well from player to player and the timing was perfect on Adriano's pass and Jeff's run."
Although the Hawks continued to pressure the Sumter defense they could only get the one goal and came into half-time leading 1-0.
The second half was much of the same as the TCTC Hawks defended their half of the field well and kept pressure on the Fire Ants. Half-way through the second half, TCTC scored their second goal on a header by Richard Dorn, assisted by Matthew Laird. The Hawks continued to pressure and possess the ball, but couldn't score anymore goals in the second half. The final score was 2-0 for the Hawks.
"Today, once again, our backline did a tremendous job. They overlook the amount of work they do in each match, but if it wasn't for their abilities we would not be able to pressure our opponents as much in their defensive half." Coach Heberling said.
The Hawks continue to impress on the field. With their win they are now 4-1-1 on the season. They travel to Allendale, SC to take on USC-Salkehatchie on Wednesday at 5:00 pm. The next home game is Saturday, October 2nd vs Wake Tech at 4:00 pm.
For his goal in the game Jeff Antinoro was selected as POG by the USC Sumter team.
vs SMC 9/15/10
The men's team returned to action on Wednesday, September 15th, to take on undefeated Spartanburg Methodist in a Region X match-up. The game opened up slow as both teams tried to figure each other's game plans.
With a lot of possessions in the midfield there seemed to be no real interest from either team to score. After 15 minutes of play, the game began to open up as both teams built an attack.
Spartanburg Methodist scored first on a ball kicked in from 12 yards out. "Unfortunately, we were slow to react to SMC and then couldn't get the ball cleared from our penalty box. The player was wide-open in front of the goal and did what he was supposed to do," Coach Heberling stated.
TCTC and SMC continued to play back-and-forth through an evenly matched first half with SMC up 1-0 at the end of the half.
The two teams opened the second half much the same as the rest of the game, with possession and trying to calculate the opposition’s next move. In the second half the Hawks were able to increase scoring opportunities through set pieces and corner kicks, but nothing would go into the net.
"The SMC defense stood strong and continued to get the ball out of their defensive third," Coach Heberling stated. As TCTC continued to build pressure it was only a matter of time until the Hawks would get on the board.
Jeff Antinoro found a streaking Nathan Allen down the sideline who finished a well-placed shot just passed the diving Goal Keeper for SMC.
Coach Heberling said, "That was a great goal for our team and for Nathan. Nathan hadn't been in the game 10 minutes and to score the tying goal is remarkable."
After the goal the tempo and flow of the game changed. TCTC applied more pressure to the SMC backline, but could never take the lead. At the end of regulation the score was tied.
The first period of Golden Goal Overtime period was evenly matched with both teams getting scoring opportunities but defending them extremely well.
In the second OT period TCTC went on the attack immediately and had shots up in the first 30 seconds. The SMC could not clear their zone and one minute into the second OT Adriano Menin received a ball from Chris Stauffer, 35 yards out and rifled the shot into the back of the net for the game-winner.
"Our team played well today. We made a few adjustments in the game and the players executed them perfectly. Once again our defense played a remarkable match and Aaron made a few big saves in goal. We have a way of bringing excitement to a game."
Coach Heberling went on to say, "the team is building confidence in each other and the team as a whole."
The TCTC Hawks are now 3-1-1 on the year and will be home on Friday, September 17th at 5:00 pm for a rematch verse USC-Sumter. The Hawks knocked off Sumter 3-1 earlier in the season.
For his OT goal Adriano Menin was selected Player of the game by the Spartanburg Methodist team.
vs. USC Sumter
The TCTC Hawks men's soccer team is off to a strong start after their opening week of play. The Hawks started the season by travelling to USC-Sumter to play the Fire Ants. The Hawks prevailed in their first Region X match 3-1, with goals scored by Adriano Menin, Jeff Antinoro (Jared Thompson), and Alex Flores Chris Stauffer). "Our defense was solid today and played great as a unit. This was a terrific opening game for our young squad," Coach Heberling said. The Hawks started nine new players against Sumter. TCTC had constant pressure on the Fire Ants and attacked from all angles. After the early goal by Adrian the team's confidence increased and the Hawks pressured and won balls all over the pitch. Coach Heberling said after the game, "This was a great opener for our young team. We played two four-year schools in pre-season and our confidence was a little low. We made adjustments from those scrimmages and really stepped up our play in this game." The Hawks will look to continue improving and setting a strong foundation for future success at TCTC.
Chris Stauffer was name Player of the Game by the Sumter squad for his constant pressure and movement on and off the ball.
vs. Louisburg
After an opening win the Hawks had a day of rest before facing NJCAA #4, Louisburg College, in their first home match of the season. "We came out a little flat in the game today and were just a few steps behind Louisburg it seemed," Coach Heberling said. Although the team was slightly off they defended well and kept Louisburg from getting any serious shots on goal. Unfortunately, with less than two minutes left in the first half Louisburg got a good look at goal and fired in a shot from 22 yards out. "That goal was real disheartening for us. We fought so hard for 43 minutes and then to give up a goal right before break is always tough," said Coach Heberling. After half-time Louisburg came out and applied more pressure to the Hawks and went up 2-0 in the first few minutes of the second half. Soon thereafter the Canes scored the third goal to put the game out of reach. The Hawks started to attack more but couldn't break the Louisburg defense. The final score was 4-0 for Louisburg.
Adriano Menin was selected by the Louisburg team as the Player of the Game for his efforts in controlling the midfield.
vs. Cape Fear
On Saturday, September 11th, the TCTC Hawks travelled to Wilmington, NC, to play Cape Fear Community College. After a tough loss on Tuesday to Louisburg, Coach Heberling was nervous about how his team would show up and play versus a traditionally strong squad. The Hawks and Sea Devils were back and forth in the first half of play with scoring opportunities coming for both squads. The Sea Devils got on the board late in the first half off of a hand-ball in the penalty box. Cape Fear converted the penalty kick to take a 1-0 lead and would hold that lead through the remainder of the half. In the second half the game was much of the same. "We were back and forth with Cape Fear. Although a lot of possession happened in the middle third of the field there always seemed to be excitement and anticipation of which team would get the next good scoring opportunity," Coach Heberling said. As the game wound down the Hawks built up an attack and kept pressuring the big Sea Devil defense. Eventually, a ball landed at Chris Stauffer's foot and he put up a shot from 35 yards out. The ball hit off the keeper's hands and fell in the back of the net to tie the game 1-1. The score would hold until the end of regulation and the teams would go into Golden Goal overtime. In overtime both teams battled in the midfield and defended the opposition’s attacking opportunities. The final would be a 1-1 draw for the teams. This would mark the first time in the program’s history of getting at least a tie against Cape Fear.
Chris Stauffer, again, was selected as the Player of the Game by the Cape Fear team. His late game heroics and relentless work ethic set him apart in the game.
vs Louisburg
After a grueling 110 minute match the day before and a 4-0 loss to Louisburg earlier in the week Coach Heberling did not know which team would show up to play in the rematch versus Louisburg. His questions would be answered early when the Hawks came out a completely different team than the last match against Louisburg. "We were winning balls and building an attack early in the match," Coach Heberling stated. The team’s strong work-ethic paid off early as Chris Stauffer received a pass from Matthew Laird and then shot the ball into the back of the net to go up 1-0 in the 13th minute. The early goal put Louisburg under pressure and added urgency to their game. The Hawks defended well as Louisburg tried to put long passes over the top and penetrate the strong TCTC defense. Eventually, their pressure and a miscommunication in the back led to a Louisburg goal to tie the score at 1-1. The Hawks would not give up, although Louisburg gained confidence. With ten minutes left in the first half Jeff Antinoro received a pass from Matthew Laird and fired it home to take the lead 2-1, which was the score at half-time. "Our team came out today ready to play. Our first half was played extremely well and the team made the necessary adjustments from our game with Louisburg to neutralize their attack," Coach Heberling said. In the second half the game went back and forth, with most pressure coming from the Louisburg attack. Coach Heberling commented, "I felt with each minute that went by, and we still led, our guys gained a little more confidence to get the result. The team played with heart and determination to walk off the field victorious on Sunday." Despite numerous last minute attempts by Louisburg, the TCTC defense stood tall and kept them from finding the back of the net to tie the game.
"This was a great win for our guys. To play the top team in our region twice and the second place team once, in the same week could have broken us. The guys rose to the challenge and came out on top. It was a good weekend for our team. In previous seasons Cape Fear and Louisburg always beat TCTC. To come out with a draw and a win was important for our team’s morale, chemistry and confidence," stated Coach Heberling.
For Aaron Ransdell's tremendous job in goal on Sunday vs. Louisburg, the Hurricanes team chose him to be the Player of the Game. Aaron saved numerous shots and cleared away even more scoring opportunities. After a disappointing first match with Louisburg, Aaron stepped up big in the rematch.
The Hawks play 2009 Region X Finalist, Spartanburg Methodist, at home on Wednesday at 6:00 pm. They will then return to action on Friday at 5:00 pm vs. USC-Sumter. All home games are played at Nettles Park in Clemson.

The men's soccer team traveled to Anderson, SC to take part in the United Way's "Day of Action". The Hawks Soccer team participated in building a home with Habitat for Humanity. The project was a great way to further instill team values, but most importantly, it gave something back to the community.
Men's Soccer Preview for 2010
Under first year head coach, Ed Heberling, the TCTC Hawks come into the 2010 season with a completely new look and mentality. After a successful run to the 2008 Region X Championship game, the team struggled during the 2009 season. Since starting in May, Coach Heberling has pursued and successfully recruited numerous new players to the squad to give some much needed depth to the program.
This season the roster will start with over 30 players, including four returning from the previous season. Coach Heberling will depend upon the experience and leadership skills of returners Chris Stauffer, Thomas Forman, Austin White, and Nathan Collins to mentor TCTC Hawks new players and provide them with a better understanding of the Region X Competition.
The historic incoming freshman class led by Mike Cabush from Wisconsin, and Blane Breheny from England, should prove to be major factors in the makeup of this year’s team. The competition to make this team will prove to be outstanding. Coach Wright commented that the depth of this team will produce a team that the number 5 man will be as good as the number 1 player.
The team knows the Hawks will have to be ready to play on the highest level possible. There is no doubt that the level of play in Region X and District IV is the best in the nation. Coach Wright commented, “I hope that at the end of April 2011 I can report that the 2010-11 Hawks have taken their place in TCTC sports history as the first team to win the very tough Region X Championship plus earned a place in the National Championship by a great finish in the District IV Tournament.”
The history making play will take the Hawks to the overall goal for this season, a trip to the National Championship in May 2011. The National Championship will showcase the Hawks players and most importantly TCTC to a national audience. The Hawks will be focused, ready and prepared to be their best and represent TCTC nationwide.
